PVDC Gas Barrier Envelope

Writer's picture: Mark SummersMark Summers

In our continuing efforts to improve gas retention over the lifespan of the envelope, a new envelope has been constructed using Polyvinylidene Chloride (PVDC) as a gas barrier on top of the Dyneema Fabric that we normally use. What makes PVDC unique is that it is an excellent vapor barrier in addition to a good gas barrier, and also is fairly robust in it's resistance to abrasion. This allows us to use it on the outside of the envelope, whereas previous gas barriers had to be constructed on the inside, which has important benefits for leak reduction.
